Dr. Walter Martin

Beyond Pentecost

After the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the disciples were transformed from cowering men to courageous witnesses. Each had a specific calling for which the Holy Spirit equipped them. The same holds true for us today.

Its easy to feel insignificant and unimportant, but in Christ God gives us a place in his body.

With regard to spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led. So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, Jesus is cursed, and no one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all. For one is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. It is one and the same Spirit, distributing to each person as he decides, who produces all these things.

For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the bodythough manyare one body, so too is Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether we are Jews or Greeks or slaves or free we were all made to drink of the one Spirit. For in fact the body is not a single member, but many. If the foot says, Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body, it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. And if the ear says, Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body, it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would do the smelling? But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. If they were all the same member, where would the body be? So now there are many members, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you, nor in turn can the head say to the foot, I do not need you. On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential, and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity, but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member, so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another. If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a member is honored, all rejoice with it.

Now you are Christs body, and each of you is a member of it. And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues. Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they? But you should be eager for the greater gifts.

And now I will show you a way beyond comparison. 1 Corinthians 12

From the greatest to the least, each believer is essential to the proper functioning of the Church.

From Him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. As each one does its part, the body grows in love. Eph 4:16

It is only carnality (selfishness) that poisons the well. Do not look at others and envy; rather look to Jesus and find your calling. The greatest enemy of the Church isnt Satan. He is second. The greatest enemy of the Church consists of self-absorbed Christians. There is a distinct difference between a Spirit-filled saint and a carnal believer.

So, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but instead as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready. In fact, you are still not ready, for you are still influenced by the flesh. For since there is still jealousy and dissension among you, are you not influenced by the flesh and behaving like ordinary people.
1st Corinthians 3:1-3

For I am afraid that somehow when I come I will not find you what I wish, and you will find me not what you wish. I am afraid that somehow there may be quarreling, jealousy, intense anger, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder. I am afraid that when I come again, my God may humiliate me before you, and I will grieve for many of those who previously sinned and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and licentiousness that they have practiced.
2nd Corinthians 12:20-21

A carnal believer is Satans delight. He comes in all shapes and sizes but always leaves a mess, a dis-unity behind. Some think that because God is sovereign no damage can really be done to His Church. They obviously ignore the Bible. So there you have it.

Are you filled with Gods Spirit? Salvation is of grace and so is the anointing of the Spirit. We dont work to be filled but we die to self-sovereignty and the Holy Spirit works through us. How can I know if I am filled with the Spirit of God? Will my behavior be perfect? NO! But we will not continue to disregard Gods word. Sin will find no permanent resting place in our life. When we sin we will be hard pressed not to repent. No longer will we be the hypocrite that hates hypocrisy, the gossip that praises Jesus or the clear as crystal yet cold as ice lover of our brothers and sisters. Change will come, gradual to be sure but clear and evident. Have a blessed summer! May those you minister to find you a blessing.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, that you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world.

You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the worlds perspective and the world listens to them. We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is fathered by God and knows God. The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love. By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent His one and only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Dear friends, if God so loved us, then we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God resides in us, and His love is perfected in us .By this we know that we reside in God and He in us: in that He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him. By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the Day of Judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world.
